Last week D and I went to Alabama to visit his family. It was my second time visiting and ever since last time, I couldn’t wait to get back to the South. People are so welcoming and warm there, and it feels like life is lived in the moment. And simply. And I so appreciate it all.

D’s family has a cabin out in the Country. They go there for hunting and fishing and family gatherings and for relaxation, too. We went there twice during the week, once to fish and drive an ATVish vehicle around the land. D’s uncle even taught me how to drive it which was really fun. The second time we drove to the cabin, D’s uncle put D to work cutting grass. I was in charge of making sandwiches for D and his 3 uncles.

On the way to the cabin we always stop at Jack’s, a Southern fast food chain, for breakfast. If you know me, you know I’m not one to eat much fast food. But let me tell you- I sure do appreciate the greasy, buttery egg and cheese biscuit from Jack’s, washed down with an OJ.

Speaking of biscuits, here are some photos of some other meals:

So, between grits and biscuits… I’d say we got our daily fix.

We also enjoyed popsicles from Steel City Pops- I got honeydew and D got buttermilk (which tasted like cheesecake- he won!)

My favorite meal from the whole trip was this fish fry, which D’s uncle and aunt prepared. Fried catfish, fries, and hushpuppies. And coleslaw.

Alabama has been defined for me by hugs, sweet tea, games of dominoes, and long country roads. All of these things bring a big smile to my face and like last time, I already cannot wait to return to the South!
